Director/producer Rob Caprilozzi joins Brian and Doug for a firsthand behind the scenes discussion of his brand new documentary “Halloween in a Box”. It is a wonderful look back at the Halloween costume companies Ben Cooper, Collegeville, and Halco. These costume companies were a Halloween institution dating back to the 1930s. But in 1982, at the height of their popularity, the first case of domestic terrorism shook the U.S. in the form of the Chicago Tylenol murders and threatened to cancel Halloween forever. In an effort to save the holiday, the costume giants, although rivals in business, were forced to come together and unify or trick-or-treating would become extinct. “Halloween in a Box” centers around the history and evolution of these Halloween costumes and explores the companies that brought dressing up on All Hallows Eve to the masses. “Halloween in a Box” is available to stream on Amazon, Google Play, and YouTube Movies. So every year Laurie's Dad Charlie Hodges watches King Kong on his Birthday. We knew this and it came to us to stop on over the Sunday after his Birthday to bring some cake and talk Kong. We figured since we will be doing a group episode on the new Kong movie in March, a little prequel would be fun. This episode we spend a beautiful morning around the kitchen table, drinking coffee, having some cake (thanks 2 Birds Bakery) and talking to a man who knows King Kong. We learn interesting facts about how the script was written, how they pulled off some of the special effects (some never done before in film), and how the film changed the industry. King Kong kicked off a love of science fiction, fantasy, and horror for a kid who got to watch the original Kong 3 times in one day on his Birthday, which started a longstanding tradition. Thanks Charlie Hodges for letting us bring you cake and enjoy a little small town Kong-chat. |

Welcome to our first installment of DARK SIDE OF THE MOVIE! Where our intrepid hosts Wayne, Doug, Brian, and Zip get together, drink some beers, and comment on an awful horror movie. Best part is, you can join us in the fun! Remember when people would watch Wizard of OZ and play Dark Side of the Moon together and get the synch up experience? Well, this podcast is similar to that. It’s also a lot of armchair-Director commentary, random musings, low-ball attempts at humor, and us poking fun at everything. Is it funny? You’ll have to be the judge on that… HOW TO LISTEN TO THIS EPISODE: Cue up the movie on Netflix (Don’t start it yet) Play the podcast episode Wait for us to count down Press play on Netflix – We’ve adjusted for streaming lag but you might have to tweak it a bit. Pause the podcast or the movie - good luck! Enjoy This episode we feature: ZOMBIE LAKE (1981) This is a horrible movie in every way, but it has A LOT of full on nudity. Part period piece, part love story, and part soft-core snuggling flick (you’ll see what we mean), this film has it all. And it’s still not even cult-good. |

Helping to advise the production are Tom Elkins, director of the film “The Haunting in Connecticut 2: Ghosts of Georgia”, and Kevin Lawler, Producing Artistic Director of the Great Plains Theatre Conference and co-founder of the Blue Barn Theatre. Lighting design is being developed by Tommy Wilson, Charlie Wagner, and the rest of the team at JSAV. Our set designer is Kit Gough, who has worked in the Omaha theatre community for several years, most recently as the set designer for “Seussical The Musical” at The Rose Theatre. Providing the artwork for our marketing is local artist Jeremy Caniglia, whose beautiful and terrifying work can be seen gracing the covers of books by authors such as William Peter Blatty (40th anniversary edition of “The Exorcist”), Douglas Clegg, Peter Straub, Max L Brooks, Anne Rice, and yes, Stephen King. The play will be directed by Jason Levering, from a script written by Levering and fellow writer Aaron Sailors and approved by Mr. King. Questions can be directed to jason@bensontheatre.org. MISSION OF THE BENSON THEATRE The Benson Theatre is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization that fosters the success of local artists, philanthropists, entrepreneurs, and underserved populations within the historic community of Benson. From her IMDB: Lynn Lowry was born in 1947 in Illinois, but raised in Atlanta, Georgia. She began acting professionally at age 17 in a theater called Shawnee Summer Stock Theater. She relocated to New York City in the late 1960s to pursue other acting jobs to support her young son. Her first movie role was a small part in The Battle of Love's Return (1971) which starred and was directed by Lloyd Kaufman, who later founded the "Troma" independent film company. Her next role was another small, uncredited part in I Drink Your Blood (1970). Her next movie, playing a dual role in Sugar Cookies (1973), which required her to act in the nude for the first time, got her sex appeal. Score (1974) came next which was a X-rated, soft-core, semi-documentary flick which brought on more sex appeal for Lowry's character. Her next role was one of her best in playing "Kathy", a neurotic character in George A. Romero's The Crazies (1973), an action-horror flick filmed in rural Pennsylvania near Pittsburgh. She then was cast for a recurring part in the TV series "How to Survive a Marriage" (1974). She was also cast for a part in David Cronenberg's horror flick They Came from Within (1975). After another minor part in Fighting Mad (1976) and a few other movies, Lowry moved to Los Angeles in the early 1980s where, after a slow start, she began acting in the local theater, and occasional movie roles. Most recently, she has been performing on stage as a singer in singing old folk songs and show tunes with her own band. |

In this episode Wayne interviews Jimmy O and April Burril. They both have a bloody horror history and tell tales of their handywork on web TV, movies, and their own special productions. Jimmyo was an artist/designer in special promotions for Warner Home Video from 1986-1990. And did amazing artwork for Batman, Joe Vs The Volcano, Gremlins 2, and Bugs Bunny's 50th Birthday and played drums since he was 2 years old. April started acting on a regular basis in 1997 when she joined the theater troupe, Jamo Alternative Theater. For several years, she worked with them on- and back-stage helping to bring to life their quirky original productions, the most popular of which was the horror-comedy-musical, Silver Scream. The character of Chainsaw Sally was originally created as a web hostess to garner popularity for the live show, but she quickly gained her own fan-base. When she left the stage to move on to film projects in the guise of Planet X Entertainment (now known as Forbidden Pictures), Chainsaw Sally was the natural choice for our first full film project. A few projects later her husband Jimmyo Burril came up with The Chainsaw Sally Show slash-com series. |
